May 21, 2015—Representatives from the local radio station, HOT 95-7, partnered with Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union (GCEFCU) to surprise a Horne Elementary School educator with a cash prize on May 21.

Morning show host Sarah Pepper came to the school with GCEFCU representatives Julia Arceneaux and Marshall Bennett to give away $500 to Horne teacher Amber Brunmeier through the Sarah Pepper Cares initiative.

Brunmeier is the third Houston-area teacher to be recognized, according to Pepper.

“My brother was a teacher before he passed away, so I have a huge soft spot in my heart for teachers,” she said. “I know they spend a lot of money on their classrooms. I approached GCEFCU with the idea and told them what I wanted to do. Within 60 seconds, we had this planned. They’re nice enough to give me 500 bucks every month to do it.”

Prior to surprising her with the check, Pepper asked some of Brunmeier’s students to share why they liked her as a teacher.

“It’s been a crazy two years at times,” said Brunmeier, a second-year educator. “But they inspire me to come into work every day. Their words meant a lot to me, and I was very excited about the check. I had no idea.”

Brunmeier said she is not sure what the $500 will go toward in the classroom, but would consult the students for suggestions.

GCEFCU representatives Julia Arceneaux and Marshall Bennett said they appreciated the passion that Brunmeier puts into her profession.

“It is heartwarming to see that,” said Arceneaux, GCEFCU business development coordinator. “It makes us appreciate being able to help her with the donation. It’s just awesome to sponsor such a great teacher.”
